Beverages

  • Agave (Agave spp.)
  • Beer. Beer is a carbonated alcoholic drink brewed from cereal grains (especially malted barley and wheat) and fermented with yeast. Other ingredients may be added for flavor, stabilization, or preservations. Hops (Humulus lupulus) is the most common additional ingredient, though there are many others.
  • Chicory (Cichorium intybus)
  • Cocoa tree (Theobroma cacao)
  • Coconut tree (Cocos nucifera)
  • Coffee tree (Coffea spp.)
  • Elder (Sambucus spp.)
  • Guarana (Paullinia cupana)
  • Juice. If a plant has a juicy part and is not poisonous, somebody has probably made juice from it. The most common juices are made from fruits, especially including those of the genus Citrus (e.g., orange, lemon, lime, and grapefruit), the genus Prunus (e.g. cherry, peach, and apricot), some of the over 7500 varieties of apples (Malus pumila), grapes (Vitis vinifera), mango (Mangifera spp.), pineapple, (Ananas comosus), and passionfruit (Passiflora edulis). Lesser known fruits include feijoa (Acca sellowiana), Otaheite-apple (Spondias dulcis), and lucuma (Pouteria lucuma).
  • Kava (Piper methysticum)
  • Liquor. Liquor (or distilled spirits) is an alcoholic beverage made by the distillation of fermented fruits, grains, or vegetables — typically requiring a high starch or sugar content. Liqueurs are similar, being made of distilled spirits, but also include various other flavorings (most commonly sugar-based).
  • Myrtle (Myrtus communis)
  • Rice – Asian (Oryza sativa)
  • Servicetree (Sorbus domestica). The edible fruit (called sorbs) of this widespread tree are made into jams, jellies, and an alcoholic beverage similar to cider.
  • Tea. Tea, a beverage that is made by steeping plant parts in hot water, is made from a truly huge variety of plants, from across many different cultures around the world and throughout history.
  • Tea plant (Camellia sinensis). The tea plant is the source of the “tea,” including the black, green, white, yellow, and oolong varieties.
  • Terebinth (Pistacia terebinthus)
  • Wine. Wine as a generic term refers to an alcoholic beverage made from high-sugar-content fruits. Most famously, wine is made from grapes (Vitis vinfera subsp. vinifera), but wines are made from many other plants, including rice, coconut, elderberry, and jambolan (Syzygium cumini).
  • Yerba mate (Ilex paraguariensis)
